NYC Code Blue

During the recent days of freezing temperatures, 10 of our city neighbors have died on NYC streets, a majority of whom were experiencing homelessness. Please share the information below to save lives in NYC this week. 

In NYC, a “Code Blue” policy is in effect when the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below, including wind-chill, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. 

  • Call 311 to report someone in need or to locate a shelter. 
  • Call 911 if you suspect someone is suffering from hypothermia or frostbite or otherwise needs immediate care. 

Code Blue Meaning

Code Blue triggers emergency shelter, outreach and drop-in services for people experiencing homelessness:

  • Street outreach is increased
  • Drop-in centers take as many clients as permissible by Department of Buildings restrictions
  • Standard intake processes are suspended such that anyone in need can walk into any shelter
  • No shelter suspensions or sanctions will be implemented 

Drop-in Centers

Drop-ins for people experiencing homelessness are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. You have the right to access services regardless of immigration status. Drop-in services include:

  • Hot meals, clothing, showers and laundry facilities
  • Counseling, case management services and connections to medical and mental health care
  • Job search and/or benefits assistance
  • Support to transition off the streets
